Scott & Sarah ArensmanArensman Archives - On Our Way to Belize!June 2007
Summer Greetings!
We pray that
June finds all of you well and happily enjoying the warm sun and fair
weather. Our family just returned from our annual Arensman Family camping
trip with Scott's parents, his brothers and their families. The picture
was taken by our oldest daughter at the top of Stone Mountain in Wilkes
County, North Carolina. After a strenuous hike to the top, in which
the last 300 yards are sheer rock-face, we were rewarded with a view of the
surrounding mountains that stretched for miles! In our family there are
now 17 grandchildren for Gram and Peepie (Scott's parents) ranging in age from
four months to fifteen years and a campground is about the only place that can
accommodate us all! This yearly vacation is something we will greatly miss
while we are in Belize, however, our family intends to keep up the camping while
we are there. Wonder what camping in a Central American rainforest is
like?
As ever, God
is continuing to show us His faithfulness and is walking this path with us day
by day. New support is slow coming in at the present, although it
definitely comes in waves. Some weeks we will get half a dozen new
commitments, and other weeks we may have none. Thank you so much to all of
you who are faithfully supporting us through your prayers, your messages of
encouragement, and your financial gifts. We know that you are the means by
which God is making provision for us. We pray that you are each being
blessed through your giving as much as we are blessed through
our receiving!
NEWS FROM THE FIELD - Today (June 4th), one of the families from our team has left Belize to return to the States. Dave and Jane Arends have served over the past two years in Belize with MTW. Dave came on as a Physicians Assistant at the Medical Clinic and eventually transitioned into teaching Chemistry at Cornerstone High School (the school where Scott will be teaching English). He also served in music ministry in the church plants. His wife, Jane served in many areas including teaching Home Economics in the high school, providing hospitality to guests of the team, working with church plants and youth ministry, and was instrumental in having a clay oven built at the school, which she used to promote small enterprise with many of the students. They both invested their time and hearts into relationships with Belizeans and are leaving behind many friends. Please pray for the Arends as they return to "regular" life in the States. Dave's parents are in poor health and his mother is not expected to live much longer. Remember the Arends' three children as they make the transition back into the American culture. And finally, pray for the team back in Belize who are facing the task of continuing the work with less help. Thanks! I am painfully aware of how, in my own strength, I fall short every day as a disciple of Christ. So what is it that makes me think that I can do anything to further the gospel of my Lord? How can I be effective in ministering to others? How can I do anything to benefit Christ's kingdom? I have struggled with these thoughts and questions for months. Finally, I think I am beginning to understand: Christ commanded ALL of us to go and make disciples. What qualifies me for this task is the fact that I was chosen by God to be an object of His mercy, and through the imputation of Christ's righteousness I am now declared righteous. There is no other qualification required. As a matter of fact, if I believed that I possessed some great gift and felt that I brought my own value to the field, then I might be more of a hindrance than a help! I am reminded of Exodus 20 when God instructed Moses to build an altar for the sacrifices. God told him to use only stones that had not been hewn. In other words, rough, raw, jagged rocks that had not been smoothed, cleaned up or polished by man. I suggest that this presents a picture of us. God does not desire us to come to His service only after we have removed our rough edges, washed away our dirt and polished our facade to a fine luster. No, He calls us to come to Him, with all our coarseness and dust and imperfections. He desires to be the One who will fit us for His use. If we are living stones, being built into a spiritual house, then He is the Master Builder, and He will shape and smooth and polish us to suit His own purpose. Another thought: Just as our salvation is wholly dependant upon Christ, and any addition of works or merit is unacceptable to God, I believe that our success in the making of disciples is also wholly dependant upon Christ. By myself, I cannot persuade people to follow Christ. I cannot cause them to love Him and desire to live a holy life. People will not become disciples because of my example. Yet, Christ has commanded me to go and make disciples... does this make sense to you? When we want to "train" people for a task, don't we look for the best, most qualified person? Don't we want someone who has mastered the material and who can set a perfect example for others? This seems like a winning plan to me. BUT, "the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men...not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the mighty." (1 Cor. 1:25-27) God says He chooses the weak, the 'unqualified', the least of us to do His work, "so that no flesh should glory in His presence - He who glories, let him glory in the Lord!" (1 Cor. 1:29-31) One reason He chooses to use us is because whenever someone like me can have any apparent success in the kingdom, then all the credit and all the glory must go to the Lord! If I feel ill-equipped and unable to contribute anything useful to ministry, then it can only be Jesus who draws people to Himself and transforms their lives into a beautiful testimony of His goodness. And you know what? You are called to do the same! If you have been redeemed by the blood of Christ, then you too are commanded to participate in the making of disciples. Most of you may never be called to the foreign mission field (although we would love your company!) but nevertheless you must be about the business of your Father. You can witness to those around you, wherever God has placed you: in your family, your neighborhood, your workplace, your gym, your doctor's office, or your local post office! You can be even more intentional through getting involved in a particular ministry in your local community and through supporting missions abroad. What a privilege we share!
Sarah
