Ministry Change - We Need Your Continued Support
Date: Wednesday, October 23, 2002
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
First of all I would like to thank you for your tremendous
encouragement to our family in letters, cards, phone calls, and E-Mails
sent upon my father's going to be with the Lord August 6. Together with
your expressions of love and support we were so very touched by
approximately 80 E-Mails received from Chile, many of those from Dad's
"spiritual children" who had come to know Christ through his ministry. Dad
was a good and faithful servant of our Lord Jesus Christ, loved by all who
knew him. It is an honor to be his son.
My mother is doing very well. We are living close enough to get
together a couple times a week, and I am taking her with me on some trips
to churches where she is known. She is very grateful to be in a place like
the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community and get the support of
godly men and women who live there.
As you know, the Lord in His Wisdom and Sovereign plan has
permitted us to go through a difficult period of separation from Chile. We
know that He is in charge of our lives (even when at times it has appeared
to us that He isn't). And we know that in His gracious hands He is molding
us and making us more and more into His Image. We thank you for your
prayers, words of encouragement, and patience in this period of time in
which we have considered it prudent not to express ourselves to you as
freely as before.
During this year we have been encouraged by all the possibilities
of further ministry that God has been opening up to us. There is so much
to do in His Kingdom work!!!. Yet where we see that my gifts and
experience would best be used right now is with a mission organization
called Logoi. (See attached document "Logoi Ministries", written by its
president Les Thompson, and their web page www.logoi.org). Mission to the
World and Logoi have had a long relationship of mutual cooperation and I
will be loaned out to them. This means that I will continue as an MTW
missionary with your partnership and support (Lord willing), yet lent out
to work under another mission agency that is in an area of ministry that is
more specialized than MTW, or that it is working in a different
geographical area. (Wycliffe Bible Translators is another mission agency
with which MTW has a working agreement. These mission agencies have had
the approval of the PCA General Assembly). Thus Mission to the World is in
full agreement with this decision (see the attachment "Letter from Ken
Thompson"). Among other responsibilities there, Logoi has asked me to
develop the pastoral psychology undergraduate program and later their
masters program. This is a privilege, yet an awesome responsibility. I
know very able and godly professional Latin American people in this area
where I will be able to enhance their ministry internationally through
Logoi. I expect that our PEPP program in Chile will become international
through this means.
Logoi's office building is in Miami, and we plan to move to Miami
after Daniel gets out of school here in Lancaster, next June. My
work will be focused on Latin America and all the Spanish speaking
world. I will not only be heading a program development, writing and
translating, but I will be traveling to Latin America to give intensive
seminars and courses various times a year.
Apart from our work with Logoi I am also cooperating with Dr.
Richard Pratt in the Spanish "wing" of his Third Millenium ministry (See
www.Thirdmill.org), and with Robyn we are spearheading the translation of
the Great Commission Sunday School materials into Spanish
(see www.gcp.org) . We are starting with these projects already, and so
we will be keeping you up to date on our progress and need for your prayers.
Robyn and I have been praying and seeking godly counsel in the
process of this decision over the last few months. We believe we can
respond to some important work that needs to be done for the Kingdom of God
in the Spanish speaking world. So, God is opening our eyes to see not only
Chile as our field of service, but all of Latin America.
As our supporters over these many years, we are asking you to join
us and stay with us as our partners in ministry. We need your prayers and
we need your financial support. Our income continues to be as missionaries
who are supported by churches and individuals. As the case has been so
far, the support will still go through Mission to the World and to the same
account number 11125. Our need is the same as that which we had in Chile,
yet right now our account is very weak due to all the expenses of our move
back to the US.
Thank you very much for your encouragement, support and
prayers. I am scheduling our visits to you in order that I may report to
you personally on our work in Chile and our future work in Latin
America. Please let me know when it would be convenient to go to your church.
May I add before I close, that the Cristo Rey church has gotten
permission to use their building. They have been using it for a month
now. There is great enthusiasm because of this. I understand that the
Sunday School and youth attendance has grown recently, and that the
leadership weekly seminars are still going strong. Praise the
Lord. Continue to pray that they may find a pastor.
