February 1, 2005

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

The following is a letter from our daughter Susana who is at Covenant College. Please consider helping her to get to Spain in March. It is good to encourage this third generation of missionaries in our family!! A little help from all of us will get her there. Thank you.

Dear family, friends and loyal supporters,

Covenant College is providing the opportunity for students to learn about the ministry of Operation Mobilization in Talavera de la Reina, Spain during the week of Spring Break, March 5-14, 2005. As you know, I grew up on the mission field and understand much of what missions is about due to watching my parents' work in Chile. However, God has been giving me a growing desire for learning more about missions on my own and in places other than South America. The idea of going to Spain is exciting for me because it is the origin of the Spanish language; having gone to school in Chile, I had the chance to read many great classic works of early Spanish literature.

I am approaching this opportunity as one of growth. As a group, we want to learn about the work and life of the church in Spain, the people of God seeking to proclaim His name in the Spanish culture. We intend to explore this by asking questions pertaining to the church members' vision for their community, about how they engage their culture and find entry points into their culture's priority systems, and about their struggles and joys in ministry and life from their own perspective. We want to experience their daily tasks and concerns as well as taste of the fellowship of believers, realizing that we are gaining just a small glimpse into the lives of our Spanish brethren, but knowing that this is a starting point for deeper awareness and further integration.

The group will be hosted by missionaries working with Operation Mobilization, an international church-planting, evangelism, discipleship, and community development agency. We will be working primarily with the Cajas, a young family serving as team leader of the Operation Mobilization outreach in Spain. Talavera is a city with high levels of immigration, and a high rate of alcoholism and drug addiction, where the Cajas are aiming to reach the most marginal immigrant groups in Talavera, Latins from South America and Muslims. According to their website, "There are hundreds of towns with no gospel witness and no church." The field team has a desire to form Bible study groups in several of the towns outside Madrid as well as to see the creation of a church-centered social work network.

The field has expressed excitement that we are coming and stated that they are flexible to the desires and talents of our group. They have invited us to share in their church services and activities as well as in general community outreaches. Andrew Cajas has requested that I do translation at church services and when ministering to people.

Our goals in going to Spain are two-fold: to serve the church in Spain, and to learn more about missions first-hand as we seek the Lord's direction for our futures. In my case, I feel that God is calling me to the mission field sometime in the future, and I need to make the transition from being the daughter of missionaries to that of becoming a missionary myself. Growing up in Chile has given me the opportunity to learn many important tools that will be useful in a future career on the mission field. However, I still have much to learn and know that this is a big reason why God is calling me to Spain. I am hoping that you can find it in your hearts to help me get to Spain by sending me a contribution towards the $1200 I must raise by March. Thank you for considering this request.

In Him, Susana Crane
