The McMahan Ecuador Update
News for Friends, Family, and Partners
May 22, 2008
Dear Praying Friends,
Thanks so much for standing with us in prayer for Ecuador. We are deeply aware of the spiritual need here, and are thankful to be part of the work! Thank you for being part of God’s provision for us and for our team.
SOMETHING NEW?
When we arrived here almost 2 years ago, we heard about a group of people in a coastal town about 4 hours from here called Quinindé. One of the members of La Gracia church (where we attend, and Mike is a deacon) is a doctor, who began an outreach in Quinindé about 5-6 years ago. She began teaching general health, and expanded to community banking in an effort to encourage women to plant fruits and vegetables to feed their families and to sell for income. The entire ministry Dr. Yeny (pronounced Jenny) has done involves presenting the gospel, and through this ministry (which is associated with the Luke Society), many have come to know the Lord. Because of Yeny’s ministry, there are now 8 community groups, each of which has a community bank. While most of the groups have focused on ministry to women and children, many men are now coming to know the Lord as well. Some time ago, a group from Quinindé approached the elders at La Gracia church (here in Quito), and asked them to help them start a church. In April of this year, the elders of La Gracia began taking turns teaching a course called “The Body of Christ” to help these folks begin to understand what it is to be the church. The elders have committed to help this group for 6 months. At the end of that time, the elders and the group from Quinindé will meet to decide if this group really wants to be a Presbyterian church.

We, Mike and Robin, have missed direct involvement in a church plant. While we have been actively involved in church revitalization, with a desire to strengthen existing churches, we also have a deep desire to be directly involved with church planting again. We have expressed our willingness to go to Quinindé both to our team and to the elders at La Gracia church. All of us are praying and asking the Lord to make clear our path. We are very excited that this group seems to be being raised up by the Lord, and would desire to come alongside to encourage and help develop this group. Presently, there are about 40 adults and 60 children, who meet weekly for study and worship. In addition, there are children’s Bible clubs (which reach about 200+ children) all around the community, also associated with this group of people. Please pray that over the next 6-8 months the Lord would make clear to our team, the elders at La Gracia, and to us, whether we should relocate to join this group.
THE TIME GROWS SHORT!
We are somewhat taken aback by how quickly the time is flying! After a 5 month HMA, we are happy to welcome back teammates (and team leader) Craig and Stacy Pohl. After 3 ½ months here with us, we are sad to say good-bye to Joel and Barrie Chappeau. After nearly 9 months of studying Spanish here in Quito, we wish our teammates Paul and Kim Barton God’s blessing as they relocate to Shell, Ecuador to work at the hospital there. In addition, after 9 months of time in the US, we pray for the speedy return of teammates Rick and Betty Aschmann, hopefully June 14th. Meanwhile, Whitney and Waverly are quickly approaching graduation from high school. Next week, they travel to the beach with the Senior class for the Senior trip. The following week, family members begin to arrive to celebrate their graduation on June 12. Then, they head to the US on June 19. Finally, on July 11 we head to the US for 6 months of Home Mission Assignment, where we will be living in Albertville, AL. We do need a car to drive during these six months in the US. If you have a car we can use or know of a reliable car we can buy, please let us know as soon as possible.
As the time has grown short, we find ourselves busy trying to fit in all those last minute activities. We are observing Byron teach the Planning a Better Business class, giving praise and constructive criticism as necessary. We are trying to finish the biblical integration project with Byron, Cecilia and Segundo. We are counseling with a small business owner and his wife, who desperately want to honor God and provide for their family with their three small businesses. They also serve in their church, and seek balance in their lives. We have been invited to begin another church-based savings and loan group. We have plans to visit Ecoluz, the HCJB electric company where we taught the stewardship materials. We are making plans for next spring to teach the stewardship material to all of the HCJB employees. We are also planning for a missionary training institute at HCJB, in which they want us to teach stewardship, small business development, and how to promote savings and loan groups to missionary trainees. We also desire to make a short trip to Guayaquil, and possibly another short trip to Quinindé before we leave for HMA. In addition, we have a short-term team coming to visit from our home church in Salisbury, MD June 14-21.
PRAYER REQUESTS
As you can see, there are many needs for prayer. Please pray as the Lord leads you for:
- The group of believers in Quinindé, and the leaders from La Gracia
- Our possible involvement in the work in Quinindé
- Transitions for our team as members return to the field, and as we leave for HMA
- Joel and Barrie Chappeau as they return to the US
- Our own needs for HMA; we need a car to use for 6 months
- The last minute activities before we leave
- Possible trips to Guayaquil and Quinindé
- The work team from Providence in Salisbury, MD (We are so excited!!!)
- Whitney and Waverly, that they would say good-bye well
- Whitney and Waverly’s transition to the US, and eventually to different colleges
Again, we thank you for your financial and prayer support. God uses these things to encourage us, and to move the work forward. We pray His richest blessings for you all.
In Him,
Mike and Robin McMahan
