Quick Update May 8 2006

2.5 weeks in Peru and:

  • I still don't have a working phone (although I do have a physical phone and a phone number)
  • No internet
  • I've not been sick yet

My job right now involves a good bit of communication with the US - oh well! No phone or internet at home. Fortunately we have an office here in Cusco so I can come and work during certain hours.

I cried at some point each day of the first 10 days I was here - just missing US culture BADLY - missing the order, the personal space, the customer service... EVERYTHING! Missing my family and friends - leaving my support system and having to start all over - feeling so alone. (I'm doing much better now - but please keep this in your prayers!)

I took a group of 6 people to 3 different cities in Peru (Pucallpa, Lima, Cusco) for a Vision Trip. It was a great week (thank you Lord!!) and we were able to hear from missionaries in each city about their work and vision. Even though the trip was for the 6 attendees, it probably benefited me the most in that I began to become accustomed once again to this country and its differences - also was personally renewed in my own vision and dream for this country. In Pucallpa we were able to fly in a 6 seater floater plane to a village... 15 minutes by plane.... the same trip takes one full day on the river in a boat with a motor. In Cusco we were able to sit down with a family up in the mountains to eat corn and beans and later saw our refugee house under construction. In Lima we heard about the work from 3 different teams, from middle/upper middle class church plants with doctors and professionals, to the poorest of the poor in Huaycan and were able to eat with the 8 kids in the after school program at the church plant there.

There was so much more but remember, this is a QUICK update.

I am settling in, and now that the Vision Trip is in the past, I will be focusing on helping our team with the summer work teams that are coming.

I sent most of my things in a crate via ... well who knows, I think it travels by boat. It should arrive in Lima around May 27th and then later to Cusco. The running joke these past few weeks has been - yes, I have one of those, but it's on the crate....

Thank you so much for any and all prayers - they are sustaining me.

Love,

Laura
