"I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, because I hear
about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints. I
pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a
full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ. Your love has
given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed
the hearts of the saints."October 31, 2003 The Word of the Lord... Philemon 1:4-7 ...Thank you for your prayers!!...
I wanted to send a short update to tell you all THANK YOU for
all of your prayers and words of encouragement given to me with regard to
our trip to Abancay to talk to the youth there.
We had a GREAT trip & the 5 hour bus ride each way was more or less without incident, and we were able to spend Friday evening and most of the day and evening Saturday with the youth. Nathan carried my bag and guitar everywhere we went and Jorge was a great help with translation and deeper explanations in Spanish. We covered the basics of salvation: election, effectual calling, regeneration, justification, adoption, sanctification, etc... and also responses to this such as legalism, antinomianism, and Christian liberty. The last session consisted of two "workshops" where they answered questions to probe their hearts with regard to all we had discussed. It seems that the most common method for "teaching" here is to have a teacher tell you things and then you spit back what you "learned". We have not seen much teaching where the student is probed to THINK about the information and come to conclusions. They were a bit shy about this at first but after some time began to answer questions. We mostly read Scripture over each subject and then discussed questions and Saturday we ate lunch at the church, then took a combi to an overlook of the city and walked around the park. It was a beautiful view of the city with the mountains and clouds in the background. We returned and Jorge led a music workshop and taught about the difference between singing praises to God and truly adoring God before we began our last session. The pastor had to leave early Sunday morning in order to attend the ordination of a new elder, so Saturday night he asked Jorge to preach the Sunday Service. Jorge did a great job and Nathan and I were proud! :) We raced for the bus after the service for the 5 hour ride home, tired but happy. Thank you all, once again, for your prayers. We had a great time together, Nathan, Jorge and I, and we also felt that God was teaching with us and through us in both the music and the Scriptures and gave us protection throughout the entire trip. The next time an opportunity like this comes up, I want to help him prepare, but I want Jorge to do the teaching. I do believe that part of what I am doing here is to equip Peruvians to do ministry rather than trying to do it all myself!
