Frank & Darlene Helmly
Hinterland Update - September 2004

Dear friends,

We had our computer repaired in the US, and it is now back with us in Quito. We lost a few e-mails along the way, so please forgive us for not replying personally. We recently sent a prayer letter by mail, and, if you are not on our mailing list, you can read it at
http://www.mtwla.org/people/fhelmly-pl/sep04-2/ and check out a few photos from the summer at http://www.mtwla.org/people/fhelmly-pl/sep04/.

Here are highlights of some of the activities and contributions of four summer teams:

  • Held Vacation Bible School for 35 Quichua children (their first ever)
  • Poured foundation for the vocational shop at the Quichua Training Center
  • Poured foundation for the Quichua church, Sembradores de Cristo
  • Organized library of 400 books for the training center
  • Poured concrete floor for the vocational shop
  • Poured concrete floor and columns for Sembradores de Cristo
  • Presented seminars on different attributes of God in a 3-day series "Who is God?"

As you can see, they invested personal effort and "sweat equity" and we are grateful for their participation!!! One visiting team's work with VBS "jump-started" a "Sunday School program" at the Quichua church. Children are coming to Sunday School whose parents are not believers and do not attend the church (yet).

Also, Frank will occupy the "vocational workshop" next to the Quichua Training Center NEXT WEEK. It only lacks the front doors and a window, and when it's completed we can empty our basement of boxes and boxes of tools and supplies, left by the late Don Williams. Soon Frank will be able to work with the Quichua guys in all types of skills training, and he is ready!

Darlene continues to work with Cecilia Balareso on literacy and primary education for a group of Quichua women. They are learning how to take tests and are making progress! During Bible Study time, Cecilia is giving an overview of the Bible covering a few books each week (key verse, theme, author, etc). Twelve ladies have just recited the names of the New Testament books in order. Next they will begin memorizing the Old Testament books. Thankfully the names are the same in both the Quichua and Spanish Bible! Please keep this special group of women in your prayers.

We mentioned in our letter that the two MTW teams in Ecuador would hold planning meetings in late August. The result is that the team in Guayaquil and our Hinterland team have merged, but, rather than working in four sub-teams, we divided into three areas:

  • Church Revitalization
  • Theological Training
  • Deed / Presence (ie: skills training, literacy, microfinance, etc)

There is a lot of on-going change on our team. Please pray for us. The work of prayer is just as significant as working alongside us here in Quito! Thank you.

Yours in Ecuador,

Frank & Darlene
