September 2002

Spending our summer in Peru was an opportunity to learn more about Peru,  serve short-term teams and be reminded why we are going to minister among the Quechua. Our 7 weeks helped bring into focus the physical and spiritual needs and the hunger for the gospel among these unreached people.  As we desire to be ministers of God's grace, please pray for God to bring redemption into their daily battle of scratching out a living in a fallen world.
Jerry Kuhn, a member of Evangelical Presbyterian Church (Cape Coral, FL) observed that he saw all the resources in Peru that could be found in our country and was pondering why the poverty is so overwhelming.  Keith Powlison, our team leader, reminded us that the Reformation never reached South America. Because their laws do not reflect biblical principles that can be found in our government system, power-hungry men can use their positions to benefit from the poor and directionless. We are asking the Lord to transform a culture steeped in animistic tradition by redeeming His creation.  We ask you to pray that we would keep this focus and that the gospel would transform the Quechuas' lives in ways that would cause them to glorify God as they come to know the Savior and see His redemption.

Prayer & Praise

  • Praise God for the support that He has provided!
  • Pray for us as we raise the remaining  funds to be at 100% and depart first for Peru and later Bolivia to join this work.
  • Praise for the opportunity  for the Hinterland team to be able to meet in Orlando. It will occur a few days prior to the Latin America Area Retreat.
  • Pray for the family of Don Williams, Hinterland missionary in Riobamba, Ecuador. He was killed by intruders at his home in Opelika, Alabama Sept. 9th. Pray for his wife, Terry, 6 children & their grandchildren.
  • Praise our Redeemer for 2 people who prayed to receive Christ with us this summer!

Frank translating for Rev. Paul Manuel, from Evangelical PCA

Heber Berrocal grew up in a Christian home, attended university and earned a degree in biology. Then the Lord called him into ministry. He is 31, a pastoral trainee, and has completed training in Cusco under the leadership of Fidel Argumedo and Keith Powlison. Heber is now serving an internship with a church in Santo Tomas, using Spanish and Quechua. He is engaged to be married in December.
Although the town of Santo Tomas is a trading center and capital of the province, it is 8 hours away from a paved  road and has no functioning telephone. After making this dusty trip on a bus, we can now understood MUCH better the meaning of "Hinterland" - remote, far from urban centers- but well worth a trip!

Moises Saune was a great help speaking Quechua & English--we are more motivated than ever  to learn Bolivian Quechua!

Summer Medical Institute

Three weeks of translating! Thank you for praying for us! The Lord helped us speak Spanish and English to be the mouthpiece of both the doctor and the patient.  It was an incredible opportunity - in a span of 3 weeks, the 70 doctors and medical students held 13 clinics and attended over 1300 patients!  The team worked hard to address incredible health needs and to minister to the even greater spiritual needs of the people. They prayed with every patient!

God gave Jennifer a love for children and they all knew it!

Your Prayers ARE Important

One particular mother had minor health concerns, but her son and daughter age 8 and 10 were both showing emotional stress since their father had left home.  I (Frank) learned that the son had recently participated in a journey to Coylloriti as part of the Corpus Cristi celebration.  We had learned earlier that the pilgrimage is an annual Catholic ritual mixed with animistic sacrifices to Pachamama ("mother earth") of anything from coca leaves to infants.
I immediately asked the medical students to start praying for this woman and her children, realizing the possible spiritual implications.  We encouraged the family with truths from the Bible, shared with the children that they can trust the Lord for all their needs, including salvation, and prayed with them. They were so attentive and sincerely said they would return to church to worship the Creator God alone and abandon the "gods" of their animistic roots.  Pray for the truth to take hold in their hearts and for the many single moms trying to raise their children without support.

Peru to New York City to Atlanta

After our summer in Peru, we spent 48 hours in Atlanta to warm up from Peru! Seriously, we quickly changed our wardrobe from winter to summer wear before we traveled to New York City. We spent 2 1/2 weeks attending MTW's "Urban Internship" to help prepare and train missionaries for ministry. We gained insight from those who led the seminars on church-planting, mentoring, and evangelism. We are grateful for the informative and challenging topics of contextualization and conflict resolution within another culture. We also really enjoyed the "field" ministry with Hispanics in the Washington Heights neighborhood where we lived in a subleased apartment from an opera singer who left us with 3 cats! : )
So what is next?  Even if we are at 100% today, we would not be able to plan for a departure until November due to commitments we have already made.  The Lord has supplied a condo for us in Atlanta (tel # above) and our weekends will be spent visiting churches. Keep us in your prayers as we near the endÖ and the beginning ...of our journey in faith and Hinterland ministry.

Sincerely,    Frank & Darlene
