Hinterland Update - November 2004
It is a joy to write about vocational classes! For the past 2 Saturdays Frank has had twenty Quichua guys and gals at the Training Center. The students chose to learn about computers and basic mechanics in their first skills training classes. Frank is still working on getting software on two of the computers, but he and Dennis made a long desk to accommodate the four old desktop computers we have obtained for the lab. In the first computer application class, he showed them how to connect the components. Next we are teaching them basic typing. It was encouraging to learn that all the computer students are literate! In the mechanics class last Saturday, Frank and Dennis worked with the students to disassemble two small engines from a couple of farm implements we inherited from Don Williams' shop. It was an opportunity to explain why one had nice, clear golden oil and the other had half milky oil, half water in the crankcase. Needless to say, one of the motors will require extensive work to get it back in operation. But, the enthusiasm of the ten or so men is very encouraging. A few are asking the kind of questions that show they are understanding the application of the basics we have already covered. I (Frank) believe they will learn quickly and be able to apply these lessons in a new trade. It was wonderful to have our team-mates Dennis and Natalie Booth visit us for 10 days. Dennis helped Frank get the shop established and Natalie continued to disciple and grow her relationships with the Quichua women. For the better part of 4 days, Dennis helped Frank unpack and organize the tools they packed together at the Williams' residence in Riobamba in April 2003. It has been like an early Christmas to them and a testimony to how much the Lord enabled Frank and Dennis accomplish in a short period of time last year. The crates have been stored in our home for 20 months and were moved to the Training Center last month. Now all their hard work pays off as each student can learn hands-on with the items from Don Williams' well-supplied workshop. We are GRATEFUL for the privilege to serve the Lord in Ecuador. And we are grateful for the relative stability of this beautiful country. There have been some anti-government demonstrations these past few weeks but they are centered around universities where we have little contact other than driving by. Please pray for our friends and co-laborers who have recently evacuated from Ivory Coast. They had to leave their homes with just a carry on bag and one suitcase. As you celebrate Thanksgiving, please thank the Lord for their safety and pray for God's wisdom and direction if civil war continues in their country. And pray for the believers who are left without the encouragement and nurture of the missionaries, that they would grow closer to the Lord in this difficult time. Thank you. And Happy Thanksgiving! Yours in Quito, Frank & Darlene Helmly
