Hinterland Update - June 2004
One afternoon it rained cats and dogs with lots of hail - enough to make the sky black and the ground white! Shortly afterward, the sky cleared and there was beautiful sunshine. The people who live in Quito say 'just wait a few moments and the weather will change' and they say you can experience all 4 seasons in one day! We agree! Our computer is giving us unexpected problems. It may need to go in for some repairs, so if you don't hear from us for awhile. please understand this is just due to not having a computer 'link' to the outside world! Hopefully the 'disk error' can be resolved quickly. We want to express appreciation to our boss, Don Gahagen, as he continues to make his monthly trips to Ecuador as "Country Director." That means he not only visits our team in Quito but he also adds a one hour flight to see the team in Guayaquil on the coast. Travel takes a toll on anyone, and for Don to make this trek one week out of every month, we recognize his sacrifice and make a public statement of appreciation! He is the embodiment of 'living sacrifice' and we are thankful for Don's commitment to helping us out and Sue to keep the home fires burning and caring for their Moms who are in their 90s! There are certain tasks that can only be done if you are standing on a ladder and stretching as far as humanly possible. Well, Don is at the base holding the ladder for us. He and Sue may be stateside, but we are grateful for their support and encouragement as we stretch beyond our normal 'reach' to accomplish the work that has been given us. The ladies at Sembradores continue their weekly literacy class and Bible Study. They have just finished the topic of Grace and are beginning to capture the idea of 'unmerited favor.' Next they will begin an overview of the entire Bible. Please pray for them as they work to memorize the names of all the books of both Old and New Testaments. This will be helpful as they are beginning to read, some have a copy of their own Quichua Bible and are learning how to look up references. The primary education students took their first Science test last week! Pray they gain confidence as they take more tests to complete their work in Math, Language Arts, Social Science and the book of Genesis. On Sunday our first summer work team left Quito after a week of hard work. This crew of 8 men from Community Presbyterian in Moody, AL accomplished all the foundation work for the Sembradores church - twice as much as we expected! Friday night was an outreach service and it was a special time as each team member was honored for his work. After nine years meeting with just a tin roof over a portion of their property, this church group will hold a "minga" (community work day) this Saturday to pour a concrete floor and columns on the new foundation. They are so excited! And we are so grateful to be part! Please pray for Frank's Mom, Terrie Helmly. She is taking oral chemotherapy to combat some slow-growing tumors. She battled cancer six years ago and this new round is a challenging time for the whole family. We have confidence that "all things work together for good for those that love Him and are called according to His purpose" and we pray that the Lord will make His purposes clear.
