Helmly Biloxi Update - September 26, 2005

Dear friends,

Here are a few photos from last week (Sept 21-24).

Driving past a marina - here is one boat stranded and many more under water or destroyed. The shrimp boats are tossed together like toys. There is a smell of decaying fish in the oddest places.

Ellen sifts through the debris of her parents' home that was next door to First Presbyterian Biloxi. It had survived the 'storm of 1947' and Camille. Her parents escaped out the back door as the tidal surge came through the front door. Ellen hopes to find portions of family furniture that might be pieced back together.

The force of the water pushed homes off their foundations if they weren't obliterated altogether. Blocks and blocks of neighborhoods have nothing but foundations left. And Biloxi is just the beginning of 90 miles of coast that stretches to New Orleans.

The most common sight - garbage piled up 8-12 feet high in the street. The haulers have their own special lane to help reduce traffic coming in and out of Biloxi.

For homes that are still standing, blue tarps cover roof damage. Families continue to live in their homes... but if they are damaged beyond repair, no electrical service will be restored.

This is going to be a very long recovery and rebuilding time throughout the coast. Please keep these folks (and family members and friends) trying to help out in your prayers.

Yours,
Frank & Darlene
